Democratic culture

The objective of the program: strengthened democratic culture and civic awareness in Latvia

Total amount for the program: 4 405 000 EUR

Expected program outcomes:

• Number of people engaged in decision-making processes has raised.
• Share of people involved in civic activities has increased.
• Share of people believing they can influence decision-making processes has grown.

THE PROGAM WILL SUPPORT ACTIVITIES OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS (CSO) in the following areas:

1. Awareness-raising on democracy – civic education initiatives (formal and informal), broad public campaigns.
2. People participation in civic activities – organizing civic activities and involving people, maintaining new and existing virtual or physical platforms for civic activities and networking, building a positive public image of civil society organizations and organizing campaigns to raise awareness on their activities, training for vulnerable groups on civic activities and participation.
3. Reinforcing CSO watchdog and advocacy roles – support for involvement in decision-making processes, for preparation of researches and reports to obtain data needed to reinforce the watchdog and advocacy roles, and for promoting access to information.

THE PROGRAM FUNDING WILL BE GRANTED to following projects:

• Strategic projects with a systemic vision on their importance and long-term impact on strengthening the participation of Latvian civil society and individuals, and the empowerment of vulnerable groups.

• Two calls for proposals: in 2020 and 2021
• Project duration: 2-4 years
• Grant amount per project: 40 000 – 105 000 EUR. 

• Action projects for implementation of current and urgent initiatives to ensure interest advocacy and implementation of civic activities.

• Applications for funding may be submitted at any time from 2020, as long as funding is available (submission of Action projects is closed!).
• Grant amount per project: 1 000 – 10 000 EUR

• Communication campaign on democracy

• One call for proposals: in 2023
• The duration of one campaign (project): 1-1,5 years
• Grant amount per campaign (project): 100 000 – 140 000 EUR

Additionally, under auspices of the program, a predefined project is being implemented - Research paper on CSO sector in Latvia 2020-2024. The project aims to obtain and analyze reliable data on civil society sector in Latvia, its development and necessary legal and financial improvements of the sector. The project promoter is Civic Alliance Latvia.
